A font service (X font server -xfs) provides a standard mechanism for a terminal to communicate with a font renderer running on a remote machine, reachable at CERN at lxfont.cern.ch
The use of server-side fonts is currently considered deprecated in favour of client-side fonts, and indeed the last known users of the service at CERN have stopped to use it now.

The Font Service will be therefore stopped next Monday 11 March 2013, and fully decommissioned during the coming weeks.

This process will consist of stopping the Virtual Machines of the service, before their final deletion at the end of the month, as well as the removal of the network alias lxfont.cern.ch
