CERN Accelerating science

CERN Virtual Infrastructure (CVI) backup policy change

Description of Service Change:

The number of virtual machines in the CERN Virtual Infrastructure (CVI) service continues to grow,

and more and more people are benifiting from this service.

To allow sustainable service management in the light of this growth, a modification of the backup policy of Virtual Machines is required.

From July 18th 2012, we will perform backups for disaster recovery purposes for production Virtual Machines only

VMs used for other purposes (test & development) will no longer be backed up.

Please log on to the CVI Self-Service portal (http://cern.ch/cvi) to verify the backup status of your VMs,

and contact the Service.Desk@cern.ch if a modification is required.

In the properties of the Virtual Machine:

Backup:

  • BACKUP_NO or [empty field] means that from July 18th virtual machine will not have disaster recovery backup
  • BACKUP_YES means that backup will be provided

Please note also that if you already asked for a backup for your production virtual machines the new policy does not affect you.

Thank you in advance for your collaboration,

                           best regard, CVI support team
